Orcas Island Residence

Both rustic and refined, this island appropriate residence is located on 5 acres of southwest facing waterfront land on Orcas Island.  The house is intended to blend with its natural setting and has been designed to live out to the favored places of the site and down to the waters edge.  Approached from the east, a winding path brings the visitor through a natural setting culminating at an entry patio made of Montana slate.

Once inside this 2,900 square foot home, a two story entry bridges the public and private areas of the home and provides access to the upper and lower floors.  Entering the Great room, natural light and natural materials provide the ambiance.  The cedar panelled ceiling is supported by fir timber frame trusses; the floor is wide plank antique heart pine with hydronic heat distributed in tubes below the floor.  The centerpiece of the great room is a fireplace made of several varieties of local stone capped by a madrona mantel slab.  The kitchen features custom fir cabinets with granite and wood counters and stainless steel appliances.

The private areas of the main floor contains the master bedroom suite, den, utility and powder room.  The upper floor has two bedrooms and bath for guests, and the lower floor has a large family room, office, bath and storage area.

The exterior palette of the residence is comprised of a custom metal roof and gutters, with stained wall shingles in two sizes and an accent of stone.  Sustainable features include an 11,000-gallon rainwater catchment system, a high quality closed cell insulation system and the utilization of water based finishes.
